Discuss the relationship between Koly, Sass, Sassur and Chandra in chapter 4.

  1. Chandra supports Koly by always being kind to her ever since she moved in with the Mehtas. This is shown when she comforts Koly and stands up to Sass when she gives Chandra more things then she gives Koly. Also, because Koly haas more and harder chores then Chandra, Chandra helps her when Sass isn't looking.

Sassur supports Koly by being friendly and nice to Koly. This was expressed when he said, " We should never have let you marry our son. It was not fair to you. We only wanted hime to get better." He also started teching her how to read and write.

Sass doesn't support Koly at all because she is very mean to her and she critizes Koly whenever she does her chores. She also has to do more chores then Chandra. When Sass caught Sassur giving Koly lessons she got mad. Koly tries to fight back but I thin she is no match for Sass.

  2. Koly and her friend Chandra have a great friendship. Chandra is really nice and a kind and caring person to Koly. They share alot of secrets with each other, they are best friends. On the other hand, Koly and Sass have a horrible relationship, they dont like each other. Sass is really mean and does not want Koly to learn how to read and write. Sass always scolds Koly no matter what she does. Koly and Sassur have a great relationship.Sassur likes Koly because they are both very nice and Sassur is more then welcome to teach Koly how to read and write, when she asked him.

  3. There are many interactions between the four characters in Homeless Bird through chapters 1-4. Chandra, Koly's sister-in-law, always tries to make Koly's life at the Mehta residence easier. She makes excuses for Koly whenever she can when Sass scolds her. They comforted each other after Hari's death and got through it together. Chandra usually gets treated better than Koly by Sass, so Chandra slips Koly some of the treats she gets. She does this secretly because if Sass saw she would never allow it.

Sass and Koly have a sort of uncomfortable relationship, filled with tension. Sass always scolds Koly for her work around the house, and most times Koly doesn't even do anything wrong. After Hari's death, Sass opens up to Koly for a short time and was sort of nice. Like with Chandra, they comforted each other and both got through Hari's death. That quickly vaporized, though. Sass always works Koly too hard, and finally Koly begins to fight back.

Sassur and Koly did not really know each other well through the beginning of the story. Then, Sassur began to teach Koly to read and write. Koly learns a lot from Sassur and he begins to give her books to read and practice with. Koly likes Sassur and is grateful to him.

  4. The interactions between koly and chandra throughout chapter four is that koly and chandra became really close sisters in law, for exsample koly cheers up chandra when chandra mourns for Hari. They play together in the courtyard everyday. Koly does much harder tasks than chandra so usually chandra slips her some extra food. The interactions between koly and Sass is mean and scolds everything that koly does even if she inproves on what she is doing she still gets yelled at.Koly then gets very tired of being yelled at and starts to fight back, for exsample when koly was out doing a task in the courtyard, and the bandicoot was eating some mangos on the tree koly would leave it undisturbed and leave it alone. The interactions between koly and sassur is that sassur is very kind and nice to koly, and then teaches koly how to read, whick koly has wanted to do for a long time. Koly is then really nice to sassur in return.

  5. Koly's relationship with all the family members are all so different and has really reflected onto the story. Chandra and Koly became good friends from the day they met. Chandra was very nice to Koly and they talked a lot because they shared a room. When they did their chores they would always find a way to talk. They have many great memories with eachother, like when it rained and they went out and danced or when the fruit bat case in their room and they giggled under their covers. Sass and Koly didn't start out very good. The first day that she came to the house she was already telling her to do chores and she wouldn't let her see her husband. Sass lied about Hari's age and told her that he was only a bit sick. Even after Haris death, she was still giving her scoldings if not, more. Sassur and Koly did not talk much and Koly hadn't really known Sassur that much. When Koly decided that she would ask him to use a book. Sassur had agreed to teach Koly which really created and bond between the two. Also when he told her not to tell Sass, they had a trust between the two.

  6. In the story homeless bird, there are character reactions with koly. sass is mean to koly, she scolds her for her little mistakes and doesn't respect what she does around the house but later koly begins to fight back. Sasur likes Koly and unlike his students Koly be's nice to him. sasur is very king an not scolding an he loves to teach koly how to read. Chandra enjoys having koly as a sister and koly and her are very good friends. they are very fair to each other and chandra makes excuses for koly when sass is scolding her.for my conclusion i think that this experience is affecting koly and the others and koly is lucky to chandra there to stand up for her

  9. Through the novel I have noticed how the characters react and treat Koly, Hari's wife. Sass has not treated Koly well; she is very mean and bitter to Koly. Sass makes Koly work very hard and always scolds her when she does not deserve to be scolded. But now Koly has started to fight back, she put a dead frog in the water bottle, and left the weeds in the potato garden, she also put geese dropping where Sass would step in it. Sass and Koly always had a tension in between them, because Sass always got mad at Koly, It was not a happy lace. Not everyone was like this with Koly, Sassur, Hari’s father was very kind to Koly, and he did not see her often because he leaves early in the morning for work and comes home and has to correct papers. Sassur also taught Koly to read, this is very important because not very many women in India can read only boys go to school and learn. So Sassur and Koly had happy, kind times there is no tension in between them like there is with Sass. Koly and Chandra are best friends they are very loyal to each other they got along very well, Chandra always made some excuse for Koly when Sass scolded her, if she was given a treat to eat that Koly did not receive she gave some to her. They talked constantly and told each other secrets. Once when a fruit bat flew in there window the two hid under the covers giggling until it left. Once when Sass was out Chandra tied a rope to the mango tree and they swung to the tree tops. So Chandra and Koly had a very strong friendship. As you can see some of the relation ships were good in the household but some were not very good at all.

  10. the interactions between Koly and Sass, is full of tension. Sass is mean to Koly and demands everything, for example when Koly cooks the rice,Sass says it is too dry , and not enough water, but when Koly puts more water in, Sass says that it is too wet and needs less water. she also scolds Koly, even though she does nothing to be scolded, she only tries her best, but nothing pleases Sass. After a while of being treated unfair, Koly starts to fight back. For example, when Sass says that Koly scrubbed the clothes too hard, she scrubs tham harder next time.
The interactions between Koly and Sassur, is that Sassur is trying to help Koly read. Koly loves learning to read and is very good at it, Sassur even lets Koly have Hari's book from school. Also, before Koly asked Sassur to help her to read, he barely even noticed she was still living with them.
The interactions between Koly and Chandra is that Chandra is very nice to Koly. For example, when Koly gets scolded, Chandra makes excuses for her. Also when Chandra gets a treat, she saves half for Koly.
These are the interactions between Koly and the other three family members.

Koly and Chandra had a very strong relationship; they would read magazines together and talk to each other all of the time. Sass and Koly interaction didn’t get along very well because Sass would say very mean things to Koly like” Go home to your miserable parents” also she would tell Koly that she can’t even do her own work, when she would try to do something. Sassur is nice to Koly by helping her read and write. Koly found one of Hari’s school books and she said "May I have Hari's schoolbook?" Sassur said, "What are you going to do with it? Can you read?" She shook her head and said, "I thought if I turned the pages over and over, I might learn." Sassur said "Say nothing to your sass, but come to me each evening when she is talking in the courtyard and I'll help you to read and write".

Sass is very mean to Koly, she would scold Koly when she didn't do her chores perfectly. Koly found it very hard to please Sass. When Koly did not scrub the clothes hard enough when washing the clothes, Sass would scold her and tell her the clothes are still dirty. When Koly would scrub them harder, Sass would scold her for rubbing the clothes thin. Sass was especially mean to Koly when Koly brought the mango flowers to Hari in the second chapter. She was very mean and said that Koly would not get as many mangos as the rest of the family.
Sassur is very nice to Koly. Koly asked Sassur for one of Hari's school books. "Can you read it?" Sassur asked. Koly could not read so Sassur said he would teach Koly how to read and write since he was a school teacher.
