The author of Homeless Bird makes great use of figurative language. Choose 3 examples of figurative language used thus far in the novel. For each, tell what type of figurative language is used and why it is effective.
The first example of figurtave language is on page 35 when the story said, "Hari's head wobbled on his neck like a flower to large for it's stem" it was an Simile. This sentence was effective because when I read the phrase I pictured a flower to large for it's stem. And I could see Hari's head rolling around.
The next example is on page 3 when Ram said, "When a girl learns to read, her hair falls out her eyes cross, and no man will like her." This is a hyperbole. It was effective because it helped me see the cultar and beliefs of Koly's family and the East Indian beliefs and how girls and are not treated the same as men.
The last example is on page 7 when the story said, "I heard Maa and Baap talking together so late in the night that the moon slid up and down in the sky. This was a hyperbole. It was effective beacause I pictured the parents up in the night talking for a long time.
3 examples of figurative langauge so far in this novel, one example of figurative language is "there was an endless array of butterflies and bugs" That was a metaphor. It was a metaphor because it exatrarated very much there can not be an endless amount it would have to end somewhere, it did not use like oras make it a simile either. Another example would be " he looked as thin as a willow twig" That is a simile because they exagerating not using like or as. Nobody can be a thin as a willow twig it is impossible to be that thin, it shows that because Hari was sick he lost a lot of wieght making him very thin. One other is “I felt As if i was tangled like a small fly in the web of a cunning spider" This is an example of personification and simile because a spider can not be cunning that is a word that you would use to describe a human, so you are giving non human organisms human qualites. Also simile because she said i felt "like" a small fly and a simile is describing something using like or as. So that was three examples of figurative language in the novel Homelss Bird so far.
One example of figurative language is when Koly said,"It would have been a terrible disgrace to return like a hungry dog to my parents home. It was an example of a simile. Simile is a comparison using like or as. In this case, the author, Gloria Whelan, has used like.It was affective because it shows that she was helpless and worthless. A wet dog would relate to Koly because a wet dog is not very wanted because he looks ugly and gross. Koly would have left her family and come back crawling for help, which would be against their customs. on page 72, it said,"she was like a great boulder shutting me into a cave." It was a simile because she used like in it. I think what Koly meant was that Sass was a huge barrier to her life by not letting her go to school, scolding her all day long and lying to her about Hari. She was making Koly feel like she had no where to go. It was effective because it showed exactly how Koly had felt and that she was devastated. It created much more power to what she was saying.Lastly, another example of figurative language is when Koly said,"the air was heavy with their chants." It was an example of a metaphor because she was saying it literal but the air wasn't really heavy. She said the air was heavy because their was so many chants, the air and sound was overwhelming. It is effective because it showed that their were so many people and lots of religious chants. It showed that it felt like there was a blanket of sound surrounding her.
1 example of figurative language is in chapter 1 page 3. Ram told Koly that if a girl learns to read, her hair falls out, her eyes cross and no man will look at her. This hyperbole is very effective because Ram is trying tom convince Koly that reading is not as good then she thinks it is. Koly really wants to learn hoe to read and write but her maa thinks it is a waste of time. It helps me understand that in the Indian culture, most women do not learn to read. Another example is on page 20 when Koly stayed at the Mahta's for the first night. "As I lay in the strange house, I felt like a newly caged animal that rushes about looking for the open door that is not there. This is a simile. It is effective because it makes the reader think of Koly as a prisoner in this new home, trying to find a way out, even though there was not one. The last example is on page 58 when Koly would explain how hot it had gotten. "Puffs of dust exploded with my every step". This is a simile. It is very effective because it helps the readers how hot, and dry it is in India in June.
one example of figurative language is on page 52, Koly says "it it would have been a terrible disgrace to return home like a hungry dog to my parents' home". This would be an example of a simile.this is effective, because instead of the sentence being boring and plain, it would be a disgrace to return home to my parents' house, the author made it more interesting.Another example would be on page 71, it says " his last word were like a slap". This sentence would also be an example of a simile, because words can't actually slap so it shows that Koly was very hurt by Sassur's last words. On page 39,it says "Hari's silence broke my heart", this is also another example of a simile, because it shows how sad Koly was about Hari being too sick to answer Sassur, and that he was not going to get better.
3 exanples frome the novel thus far for figuritive language it would be a terribal disgraceto return to my family like a hungry dog.the second example is when there was a endless wave of butterflyies and bugs.and the 3rd example is she was like a great boulder shutting me into a cave and i couldnt get around her or move her.
The first example of figurative language in "Homeless Bird" is on page 52. It says, "It would have been a terrible disgrace to return like a hungry dog to my parent's home." This is a simile. It puts the picture in our mind what it would look like if Koly returned to her parent's home because she did not want to be at the Mehta's-exactly like a hungry dog.
The second example of figurative language in the story is on page 59. It says, "A kingfisher perched on a peepul tree, it's red breast like a tongue of fire." This is also a simile. Because Koly said that the kingfisher was like a tongue of fire, we know that it must be a really bright red color. It puts the picture in our mind of a bright red bird.
The final example of figurative language I will describe in "Homeless Bird" is on page 61. It says, " In every room water dripped down from the ceiling, so when we had a hard rain shower outside, it was like a small rain shower inside." This makes us think that the leaks in the ceiling are making small rain drips, which must sort of look like little rain showers indoors.
These pieces of figurative language are all effective because they let us imagine and think about what it looks like in the story. They put a picture in our mind so that instead of wondering what the scene might look like, we know because we can think up a picture to go along with the story. For example, if somebody who was tall said, "The snow drifts were up to my head," then we would know that the snow drifts must be really, really tall because they are higher than a tall person's head. So, figurative language in "Homeless Bird" is very effective.
one example of figurative language is this book "Homless Bird" so far is "Haris head wooddled on his neck "like"a flower to it's large stem"this is a simile it is affective because it is showing a comparison to somthing so picture a large stem wabbling and picture Haris's neck the same way also it shows that Hari is losing all the weight from being sick and you can picture Hari's head being bigger then the rest of his head. The second example of figurative language in this book is Chandra is telling Koly that Sass is like a little red ant that sworm on you and bites and bites and bites this is also a simile. It is affective because image that Sass it picking at every little thing that anyone says or does and dont listen to anyone. The third example of figurative language is I knew what Chandra said was true, but I also knew that i could not crawl about like a beaten dog .It is affective because Sass is pushing around koly like she is a peice of durt and dont care what she does or says and dont care what her opinon is and koly dont want to have to deal with it any more she is fed up with it .
3 examples of figurative language that makes the book effective from homeless bird is when koly is speaking to Chandra an Chandra says "why do you anger my maa?" "she is like the little red ants that swarm on you and bite and bite and bite." this compares sass to red ants which just gives us a better explanation of how bad sass can be an she never gets off your back. the second example is around the same time when koly thinks "i can not crawl about like a beaten dog",this shows that koly has to get up an fight back up an fight back instead of letting sass get to her. my 3rd example is when koly is thinking she quotes " who as haris mom took my arm, holding it as ive seen the women in the market place holding chickens neck before they killed it." this tells how harsh an mad sass is to hold kolys arm so tight and be so careless like a women in the market place whould hold a chickens neck. they are many examples of figuretive language in this book which really brings out our imangination to this story, and brings out the charicters true personality which i very much like.
The author of Homeless Bird makes great use of figurative language.Three examples are Koly said "his silence broke my heart.".Anther example is Hari had slept as if any noise would awaken him. the last example puffs of dust exploded with my ever step.
one type of figurtive language in the novel "homeless bird" is on page 29 "his silence broke my heart" this is a metaphor because she is hallusinating that her heart is really brokin. another type of figurtive langauge is on page 38 when it says "in the city of fifteen thousand shrines" this is a hiporbly because there is not really exacly 15 thousand shrines in the city. one more type of figuritve langauge is on page 50 hwne it says " her words buzzed around me, stinging like wasps". this is a smilie because it uses like in it. and that is 3 figuritve languages in the novel "homeless bird"
In Homeless Bird the first figurative language is on pages 20-21 it says “as I lay there in the strange house, I felt like a newly caged animal that rushes about looking for the open door that isn’t there”. That is a simile. This is effective because it tells that Koly feels that she is trapped inside the house and that she feels that she can’t get out of Hari’s her husband home. The second figurative language is on page 25 “Lying there in his bed without his wedding garments, he looked thin as a willow twig and very weak”. This figurative language is a simile. This is effective because it makes the readers picture Hari the person who Koly is talking about as a very weak boy who is getting married. The Third figurative language is on page 35 “The road was rough and Hari’s head wobbled on his neck like a flower too large for its stem”. This figurative language is a simile. This is effective because it makes the readers think that Hari is so sick and that his head is going up and down.
Three examples of figuritive speach in the novel homeless bird. Is on page 21 from koly “as I lay there in the strange house I felt like a newly caged animal that rushes about looking for a open door, that isn’t there. This quote is a metaphor and is effective because it describes how she feels about her first day in Hari’s house. Another one is on page 66 by koly “I could not crawl about like a beatan dog.” This a meatphor that compares koly to a beatan dog because sass is beating koly down with insults. It is effective because it tells what koly feels about being screamed at by sass. The third quote is on page 3 by ram “when a girl learns to read her hair falls out, her eyes cross and no man will look at her.” This is a hyperbole because obvisouly none of this would happen in reality making it an exsaggeration.
Three examples of figurative language in this novel are...
1. On page 52 "it would be a terrible disgrace to return like a hungry dog to my parents home" this is a simile because it makes u think what it would look like if Koly looked exactly like a hungary dog returning to her parents house.
2. When a girl learns to read her hair falls out and her eyes cross so no man will look at her. This is a hyperbole because this would never happen in real life.
3. Puffs of dust exploded from my every step. This is a simile because it helps you realize how hot it can be in India
Three examples of figurative language in this novel are"In every room water dripped down from the ceiling, so when we had a hard rain outside, it was like a small rain shower outside" This figuative language is a simile because it is a comparison between two unlike things using like or as. This example is effective because you would be able you have a clear picture of whats being said for example, It was like a small rain shower outside. You would picture a rain shower. The second figurative language is "I wanted to believe that the Ganges would make Hari better, but when i looked at Hari, my hoped slipped away like a frightened mouse in a dark hole. This figurative language is a simile becuase it is also using to unlike things useing like or as. It is effective because you would imagine Hari being very sick and you could also feel what Koly is feeling by the way she thinks of Hari. The third example of figurative language is" It would be a terrible disgrace to return like a hungry dog to my parents home"This is a simile because it is comparing a hungrey dog to herself useing like or as. This is effective because you could picture a Koly being just as hungry as a hungry dog. So, you would have a image of a hungry dog.
